Showcasing Special Events, Collections and People

I was invited by Danny Lyons to do a shift on WEBE108 Saturday Night, July 31st, 2004 hosting Studio 108. Turns out that was my on-air audition, which I passed, and the aircheck is HERE to listen to. Enjoy it along with another from 4/16/05.

A few years ago, I got to do some very funny phone bits on WBLI 106.1 with Al Levine "On The Scene."

In honor of Casey Kasem and his long tenure on “American Top 40” Big Apple Airchecks is pleased to have many shows available on CD. Many are recorded from XM Satellite Radio. I have the complete collection of the original shows available from their original sources, so not all of them are listed here. Inquire about any dates you may want.

The first station I worked at!

I first started to intern at WGLI when I was in college, doing all the normal type intern things. winding carts, writing spots, babysitting the transmitter, etc.

After about six months, the PD gave me a shot after I kept giving him audition tapes, and I got a Saturday night show, then Sunday night also. What a blast I had working those nights…not a lot of power, but we had a lot of loyal listeners! I was allowed to give away movie tickets that I traded promos for with the local UA Theatre, and got to put my winners on LIVE! But then again, we didn’t have a 7 second delay system! I stayed for awhile after I graduated from college, but real life called, and I had to give up my shifts. Ever make a mistake you regret? That’s one of them. I ended up doing some fill-ins at WNYG, and was actually offered the AM Drive slot by PD Kathy Cunningham, who still refers to me “as the one that got away!”

The money was so bad, unemployment was paying more at the time!

So I got a “real job” and did occasional radio work. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it!

Did you ever wonder what radio program directors think about? How they get their ideas? How a station works from the inside? Well, here’s a book from radio personality and programmer Steve Warren that answers all those questions! Steve currently host the “Country Oldies Radio Show” heard on stations nationwide! Steve has worked at some great stations including WPTR, WKIP, WNBC and WYNY.
www.stevewarren.info

I had the pleasure to read this book after talking to Steve about it about it at The WNBC/WYNY Reunion, and he was kind enough to get me a copy. Being a student of radio, I found it extremely interesting, and learned things about the inner workings of a radio station that I never knew. If you had questions about the inner workings of a radio station, but didn’t know who to ask, this book will certainly answer all your questions, and entertain you at the same time. It covers programming, promotions, human resources, changing technology and many other subjects. It’s Available online so get your copy today.

The Alan Stark Collection

The genesis of ‘New York, Rock My Radio’ started out as a book project, The story of NYC Rock & Roll Radio from the 1950s to the 1980s, that my neighborhood friend Bob ‘The Big Bopper’ Sutton and I embarked on 1985. We started to reach out and interview Disc Jockey’s from the AM & FM dial. Our Agent, Bobbe Siegel tried to get us a book deal but the rejections started coming in…

As I was sitting at my desk with the names of the DJ’s and Radio Station Call letters written on a yellow pad, in about 2 hours later, the lyrics of “New York, Rock My Radio” were born!

An introduction through my friend Bob Cacioppo, brought in singer, songwriter, pianist and music director Gerry Dieffenbach and NYRMR had had a melody and vocals. With background vocals by Renay Ferrar & Carmel Ferrer and Executive Producer Craig Roer, a 45 RPM on Pomonok Records was pressed and sold in Record Stores in the Tri-State area and through the mail in Goldmine & Discoveries Magazines.

I was then contacted by the Program Director of WCBS-FM, Joe McCoy, expressing interest in playing NYRMR on the up and coming Dee Jay Greats Reunion Weekend! The song was played multiple times, discussed by the Jocks and ended the Reunion Sunday at midnight! I can’t describe the thrill of hearing a song that I wrote being played on probably the most famous  ‘Oldies’ Radio Station in the country.

Fast forward 35 years later, I asked my partner at Pomonok Films, Terry Katz to edit a video version of New York, Rock My Radio. Terry, using his magical fingers and I came up with a fun, innovative piece to go along with the song.

Contacted by Radio Historian and Filmmaker, the legendary Art Vuolo Jr., New York, Rock My Radio found a new life on YouTube and platforms all over the radio universe. Here’s the link to YouTube!  New York, Rock My Radio.

Hope you enjoy the interviews/ photos that have never been seen or heard in public before.

And you discover the video ‘New York, Rock My Radio’ and keep these memories alive for decades to come

The Richie Norris Collection

(In The WROW/Albany Studio)

Richie Norris is  a jingle and aircheck collector from Albany, New York. We’ve been trading for over twenty years, and finally got to meet about 5 years ago when my wife and I were on vacation in Lake George, NY. He’s helped me out on many projects, and recently told me that he had a large tub of cassettes with airchecks from the 80’s and 90’s that he recorded on numerous vacations. He graciously donated them to Big Apple Airchecks, and now the digital conversion begins! All are mp3 files.

The Tim Byrd Collection

In April of 2023, Sally Byrd and her daughter rented a U-Haul and loaded up 18 boxes of Tim’s airchecks and drove from Florida to deliver them to me. Sally said that Tim would want me to have them. I knew them for over 20 years, and I thought of Tim as my older brother, so when he passed away, I was devastated. I am slowly but surely converting those tapes to digital files.
